the Integrated Program of Urban Regeneration (PIRU) of the old centre and the port area has the aim to change the face of the city realizing a polarizing and modern waterfront, which links the historical centre and its harbour.
At the same time it intends to accelerate the recovery process of the historical heritage in the old centre, enhancing roads and architectural works, especially when they witness its past of fortified city of Norman origin and Aragonese development.
The program has the value of an urban implementation plan and develops actions even in alternative to other urban instruments involving existing structures and infrastructures, changing the destination use of some public properties (ERP in the port area) in order to reconfigure them in the form of tourist services, taking advantage of the potential of the port basin for touristic movements.
It applies the recent possibilities offered by Regional Laws on urban regeneration, which make ordinary the procedures of urban regeneration, once related to public funding and exact deadlines.
Municipalities can use fast and simplified procedures to implement major urban variations for public utilities and urban development.
Three of the activities planned in the PIRU are already in progress and act on the state of the roads of the port, with the aim to create a new pedestrian area.
